Definition of heritage areas. Rethinking residentialprotection in Mar del Plata

The safeguarding of the residential heritage in its contextual character continues to merit renewed attention. In this way, it is urgent to rethink the forms of delimitation of urban areas with a focus on typical dwellings of each territory. Since the mid-twentieth century, the original demarcations of valuable sectors through the so-called Historic Centres, have progressed in line with the broader heritage valuations. In a framework of diverse recognitions within the Latin American cities, the complexity that implies the treatment of the different types of residential fabrics stands out. Therefore, it is proposed to rethink the definition of residential areas of value in Mar del Plata, Argentina. This seaside city lacks heritage sectors, is distinguished by its past and present transformations and still has characteristic dwellings that identify their older landscapes.
