Airbnb against the right to the heritage city. Concepts based on the Guanajuato city case

The purpose in this paper is to analyze Airbnb under the notion of the right to the city. This work analyzes the relationship between the multiplication of tourist housing -Airbnb-, tourist-commercial specialization and the right to the city (the right to inhabit the urban-architectural heritage in historic centers). This is a mixed type research about urban transformations in the UNESCO’s area of Guanajuato city. The studied indicators are: land use, use of public spaces, and population dynamics. Results show how the state intervention and the business supremacy in heritage properties contravene the right to the city. Tourism in heritage areas introduces social and spatial dynamics of exclusion determined by the level of income, new uses, and the increase in the value of residential and commercial land use.
