Historical heritage in the Mexican southeast and the participation of SEDENA in the Mayan train project

Abstract

The trajectory of the Mayan train will trace a path of hundreds of kilometers that will cross five states in the south of the country, and with it, there will be a transformation in the landscapes, the physical space and in general, in the logic and community social relations. Currently, a series of controversies have emerged that have given rise to community conflicts, since there are diverse opinions regarding the advantages that the project may have, as well as the environmental and social fabric destruction that this will entail. In the manuscript, we discuss around the concepts of territory, region and from the perspective of architectural urban heritage to critically reflect on the impacts that the project entails. Within this framework, the role of the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) in the megaproject is also analyzed and the conditions that can be established to build mechanisms that guarantee security, social and economic well-being in the southern region.
