From the lost landscape to the rediscovered heritage

Abstract

Referred to historical cities’ panorama, Mexico City holds a special place regarding to urban conservation
because of the whole urban heritage inherited through its history. A lot of its heritage has been lost, as well
as its natural environment, its original landscape disappeared, that meant a breakup between city and nature.
The present article reflects on contemporary urban conservation and its main paradigms that conduct us to
“historic urban landscapes”. In the case of this city and with the gaze on its diverse types of settlements it gets to
different urban landscapes that have been constituted since late 19th century, which represents an important
valued heritage to revalue. Nevertheless, in this valuation remains pending for all that contextual heritage that
has less attention, but more vulnerable in the risk of degradation and extinction. So, we point this reflection on
that “minor” heritage.
